Programme Note

Incorporating puppetry and other stage magic, this family-friendly opera takes its inspiration from two disparate sources: Homer’s Odyssey, and the epic journeys of modern-day youngsters like Laura Dekker and Jessica Watson who have solo-sailed around the world.

Ulla is a fifteen-year old girl on the home stretch of a solo circumnavigation on her sailboat, The Homer, accompanied only by Binnacle, her trusty cat. Tired, ragged, and lonesome, she has yet to confront the most fearsome obstacles of her journey...

Ulla’s Odyssey won the open category of the inaugural Opera Factory Composition Competition 2012, and winner of the Flourish Opera Competition 2014 with OperaUpClose.
